THE CARVAJAL FAMILY, The Jews and The Inquisition in New Spain in the
Sixteenth Century
SEPHARDIC JUDAICA
Author: Alfonso Toro
Price: $50.00
Shipping: $5.25
Alfonso Toro, Adaptation by Frances Hernández. This book has been a
year late in publication, originally scheduled for July 2001. It is an
admirable work as translated by Ms. Hernández from the original by
Alfonso Toro who was an employee of Mexico's National Archives in the
1930's. Mr. Toro did extensive research on the Carvajal family, the
tragic Crypto-Jews, many of whom died at the stake during the
Inquisition including, Luis de Carvajal, El Mozo, known as "The
Enlightened," The only colonial Jew in Mexico who left extant
writings. Luis' uncle Luis de Carvajal de la Cueva -the noted
conquistador and colonizer of Nuevo Leon-was a devout Catholic but was
imprisoned and died before he could come to trial. Toro's tale is full
of life and of the vivid personalities of the characters whose saga he
recounts in meticulous and loving detail. Shipping $5.25 ($2.75 reg. +

SAGRADA MITRA DE GUADALAJARA ANTIGUO OBISPADO DE LA NUEVA GALICIA,
Expedientes de la Serie de Matrimonios Extractos Siglos XVII-XVIII
HISPANIC GENEALOGY
Author: Maria de la Luz Montejano Hilton
Price: $160.00
Shipping: $12.00
A monumental work of marriage dispensations from the Obispado
(Bishopric) of Guadalajara which is now in the Mexican State of
Jalisco, but known in 17th and 18th century as the Obispado de Nueva
Galicia which at times covered the states of Jalisco, Nayarit,
Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Nuevo Leon, and Texas. Marriage in the
Catholic Church required an investigation and a dispensation from the
church that the two parties were not related or related to a distant
degree, which would not prohibit marriage. These documents therefore
abound in genealogical information. The author has transcribed these
documents from Mormon Church microfilm, as the actual records are
restricted due to church policy. The author also includes the complete
text of the document instead of providing a genealogical summary so
that a more comprehensive view of the matter can be obtained. Contains
2,975 documents, and a handy name Index. Shipping is $8.00 ($2.75

This volume has been much in demand as the surnames Garza and Treviño
can literally be traced down to practically every individual who has
roots in Northern Mexico. Captain Marcos Alonso Garza who married
Juana de Treviño was the progenitor of the Garza line in Nuevo Leon
and many of his children took their mother's surname of Treviño. The
book contains a wealth of well-researched genealogical data and has an
index. Contains nine genealogy charts, 12 appendices and first,
second, and third book of baptisms of Spaniards of selected periods
from 1536 to 1589. San Antonio, 2001 limited Ed. 154 Pgs.,

This classic work has become the "bible" for persons who have roots in
Northern New Spain ( Texas, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila).
Recently after an extended search Borderlands Book Store was able to
locate what appears to be the last available lot of this out of print
book. What began as a research project by Duaine on the family history
of his mother, the daughter of Juan Rios and Macedonia Ramirez-both
from Mier, Mexico, led ultimately to a genealogical/historical work on
the first permanent settlers in northeastern Mexico. Encompassing over
a quarter century of research, compilation and writing, Duaine
produced a benchmark publication considered basic now for research in
Hispanic genealogy of families originating in this area. Duaine
discovered, as other have, that many families who settled along the
Rio Grande were related to one another and that his grandmother's line
tied in with hundreds of other regional descendants, a result of
intermarriage between the 150-200 families who first settled the
Monterrey/Saltillo region.
The book contains chapters on these core families, the Carvajal
interlude, Diego de Montemayor and Monterrey, Alberto del Canto and
Saltillo, and the founding of Ciudad Mier. Sources came from many
civil and church documents found in Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila,
Durango and Zacatecas. Researchers will find themselves referring to
this work constantly as they find new family connections.
This lot of books is new and its covers and pages are in good
condition. Due to extended storage some page edges at the top and/or
bottom have slight spots. The price has been adjusted for these
blemishes. Those in the best condition will be selected for first
buyers. Copies are limited, so order now. Shipping is $6.50 ($2.75
regular plus $3.75 extra). Edinburg TX, 1987 1st Ed., 8 & 1/2 by 11
